Decreasing costs
Is it possible to decrease costs without losing quality?
As a rule of thumb, the higher the value of your assets, less parts are in stock. This means you want time to prepare your maintenance
What is the best option financially, without jeopardizing quality?

With a continuous monitoring system the required significant investment in a network infrastructure is often overlooked. The same counts for the challenges with local IT protocols and corporate guidelines with regards to data sharing or cloud based services.

Assets in the mid-to-higher range of value – the biggest group - typically pose less of a risk. They operate under less severe circumstances and have better availability of parts. This lowers the financial exposure in case of failure. That said, parts may not be on stock and down time still causes costly loss of production, so early detection is important. You can accomplish this by setting up a routine. In this routine, make sure that network independent offline sensor technology is combined with an inspection routine by in-house staff and external Asset Optimization experts. A healthy mix of the both is necessary. The sensor will only have local indication. This is a low cost solution with, no network infrastructure needed. Thus, you do not need to involve your IT department. However, you do need human involvement for this solution.

If you want to determine the frequency for involvement in the optimization process, you have to look at the value of the machinery and the cost of its downtime. These mid-to-higher valued assets are more challenging to strike that balance between financial responsibility and risk mitigation for. Yet, there is a good rule of thumb that you can use. The less likely it is that parts are on stock in case of failure, the more advance notice you would like. The early detection sensor is independent and offline. You want to use it to give you that early-detection notice just in time. It is your safety net. It is a helpful indicator for changed conditions between two scheduled inspections a few months apart for instance. You can use it as a cause for changing the routine and immediate intervention. The regular inspection routine is needed to collect data and to do basic trending. In this way you can catch premature wear before the sensor can pick up on it. The calculation tool on this website will provide in some guidance on recommended routine.

GBS Asset Optimization can assist in the technical selection, installation and commissioning of these system and if data security poses a threat our specialists can figure out a solution such as local download of data and offline analysis.
