These two industries are characterized by a high level of complexity and diversity in drive technology present. At a cement plant there is the quarry, raw mill, pre-hater, rotary kiln with coal mill, clinker cooler, finish mill, bag house and all sorts of conveying equipment in-between; all vital processes and with different technology. At a steel mill – or any given metals facility really – there are hot and cold rolling mills, pickling lines, strip and pipe mills, rod and plate mills, reversing mills, galvanizing lines, flatteners, tensioners – the list goes on.
Some assets need to be looked at individually such as a raw mill at a cement plant or a section mill at a metals facility, and for others a system approach works better - for example the pre-heater tower at a cement plant or fully integrated processing line at the metals plant. For individual assets a continuous online system is a good solution, combined with a monitoring contract and annual inspection if budget allows. For a complete system with multiple drives integrated, early-detection sensors year around in combination with annual inspections during sectional or seasonal outages probably make the most financial sense.
